Update on Shuffleboard Hall-of-Famers Roland & Ruth Schneider

Hello Shuffleboard Friends,

I am the Schneider’s daughter, Linda. In case you were wondering what the Schneider’s have been up to since they left shuffleboard during Covid, here is an update.

Sadly my Dad became so fearful of Covid after many shuffleboard friends passed away, he became reclusive and sedentary and only watched TV and took short walks to the Golden Village RV Resort to get the mail. They didn’t socialize much which was very sad. Mom stayed busy with her 40 year hobby of genealogy and caught up on many “finds” on her MyHeritage online genealogy tree. She even communicated with a long-lost descendant of one of her uncle’s that didn’t flee Russia before WWII. That relative in her 30’s was also on MyHeritage and they “matched” and met online and she gave Mom names of several lines/branches of relatives we knew nothing about!

In May 2024 when Dad was 89 he wasn’t feeling well and a simple visit to the doctor revealed dehydration and kidney issues. He was in Ramona Rehab for monitoring, medication, change of diet and physical therapy. He also had confusion which was the beginnings of memory loss. After he was at home he had a couple of falls and home PT to get stronger again, but he lost his ability to drive. Since then dementia has set in and it was hard for 91 yr. old Mom to care for him. Since Mom didn’t drive I ordered senior rides for their doctor’s visits and ordered grocery delivery for them. Mom was still active in cleaning, doing laundry and cooking!

This year in April after Mom turned 92 she started to have digestive issues and we thought that it was nerves from caring for Dad, but further testing revealed pancreatic cancer.🙁 We were so sad and shocked! I quickly moved them to a board and care facility in Carlsbad, CA only 15 min. from my home in Vista. It gave my Mom a great sigh of relief that she could let go and relax and not have to care for my wandering Dad with memory issues who has fallen a few times.

She was doing well for about 3 weeks but then got less hungry and more tired. Sadly she passed away in her sleep the night before Mother’s Day.🙁 We are all so sad and shocked since she was the healthy one! But we were so glad that she had no pain and I got to see her almost daily while they were there!

Dad is being well taken care of but he is bored and lonely, and actually isn’t interested in much else but TV these days. Unfortunately the facility does not have private phones and he can’t understand a smart phone or computer. If you would like to send him any greetings you can send them to me via my e-address: crawford2727@att.net.

They loved shuffleboard SO much and enjoyed all of the wonderful friends they met through the years.

Thanks for being a part of their lives. 🙂

Mike was more than a skilled player—he was a true ambassador of the game. Known for his warmth, sportsmanship, and willingness to share his expertise, Mike welcomed everyone—seasoned players and newcomers alike—into the shuffleboard family. He had a way of making you feel like you belonged.

Over the years, Mike won numerous tournaments, but his greatest victories were in the friendships he built and the players he mentored. He could often be found discussing shuffleboard strategies with anyone interested, always generous with his time and insight.

His journey included immense personal challenges—most notably, the courageous recovery from being hit by a bus. Even through pain and physical hardship, Mike returned to the courts with perseverance and a smile, never letting go of his love for the game.

Mike's extraordinary contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the California Shuffleboard Hall of Fame, a testament to his lasting impact and dedication.

We will remember Mike for his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love for shuffleboard. He inspired us all, and his legacy will live on in every game we play.

Please feel free to share your own memories, photos, and tributes to Mike in the comments below. Let’s celebrate the life of a man who gave so much to all of us.
